<p>Inadequate dietary intake of vitamin D is associated with higher levels of cognitive impairment; however it remains unclear if the link is causal, according to a new study.</p>
<p>The study, published in <em>Neurology</em>, suggests that a weekly intake of less than 35 mcg of vitamin D is associated with a greater incidence of cognitive impairment. However, the researchers noted that the association could be causal in either direction, stating it is possible that low vitamin D is a result of, rather than the cause of, cognitive impairment.</p>
<p>&#8220;The main finding of this population-based study…was that the weekly dietary intake of vitamin D was significantly associated with the global cognitive performance in both linear and logistic regression models, even while considering the effects of all potential confounders,&#8221; said the researchers, led by Dr. Cedric Annweiler from Angers University Hospital, France.</p>
<p>Cognitive performance declines naturally as we age, but it has been suggested that vitamin D status could have an impact on cognitive function among older adults.</p>
<p>It is suggested that vitamin D binds to neuronal receptors in the brain and develops an anti-neurodegenerative action. Many people have therefore recommended that maintaining an adequate vitamin D status is essential to avoid vitamin D deficiency-induced cognitive decline.</p>
<p>Researchers involved in the current study said: &#8220;We had the opportunity to examine the association between dietary intakes of vitamin D and global cognitive performance in a large representative community survey of older women.&#8221;</p>
<p>A group of 5,596 women not taking vitamin D supplements was divided into two groups according to their baseline weekly status: either inadequate (less than 35 mcg per week) or recommended (more than 35 mcg per week).</p>
<p>Compared to women with recommended weekly vitamin D dietary intakes, women with inadequate intakes were reported to have lower scores on the short portable mental status questionnaire (SPMSQ). The researchers observed that inadequate intakes were more often associated with cognitive impairment, as defined by an SPMSQ score of less than eight.</p>
<p>&#8220;We found an association between weekly vitamin D dietary intake and SPMSQ score. Inadequate weekly vitamin D dietary intakes were also associated with cognitive impairment,&#8221; the researchers wrote.</p>
<p>They stated that it remains a possibility that low vitamin D status may be a result of poor diet, due to cognitive decline. But, they emphasized that vitamin D insufficiency has been suggested as a contributing factor to hypertension, which itself is a major risk factor in the development of cerebrovascular diseases and cognitive decline.</p>

<p>A special combination of folic acid and vitamins B-6 and B-12 appears to slow  brain atrophy in elderly patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a factor  that could play a role in helping stifle the development of Alzheimer’s  disease.</p>
<p>At least that’s the hope following the release of a new study from the  University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.</p>
<p>Published in the journal <em>Public Library of Science One (PLoS ONE)</em>,  the study looked at homocysteine levels in participants, which in turn have an  effect on brain atrophy, which in turn plays a role in Alzheimer’s.</p>
<p>Researchers opened their study stating: &#8220;In the elderly, the brain shows  significant progressive atrophy. The atrophy occurs even in cognitively healthy  subjects but is much accelerated in patients suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.  An intermediate rate of atrophy is found in people with mild cognitive  impairment (MCI). Since the rate of brain atrophy is more rapid in subjects with  MCI who convert to Alzheimer’s disease, it is important to identify factors that  determine the rate of atrophy since reducing the rate of atrophy is likely to  slow the conversion to Alzheimer’s disease. One such factor appears to be raised  concentrations of plasma total homocysteine. Moderately elevated concentrations  of homocysteine have been associated with an increased risk of dementia, notably  Alzheimer’s disease, in many cross-section and prospective studies. Raised  homocysteine is also associated with both regional and whole brain atrophy, not  only in Alzheimer’s disease, but also in healthy elderly.&#8221;</p>
<p>Atrophy, or wasting in the brain, is a common symptom of mild cognitive  impairment and can be an early warning sign of dementia. One important factor  determining the rate of atrophy appears to be raised concentrations of  homocysteine in the blood.</p>
<p>Previously, epidemiological studies have reported that high levels of  homocysteine are associated with suspected or confirmed dementia. In fact, The  Framingham Study reported that people with homocysteine levels above 14  micromoles per liter of serum had twice the risk of dementia.</p>
<p>Tissue and plasma concentrations of homocysteine are known to be determined  by vitamin B status, as they are cofactors for enzymes involved in homocysteine  metabolism.</p>
<p>The recent study followed 168 participants over two years. Participants were  randomly assigned to two groups of equal size. The first group was treated with  a European drug called TrioBe Plus®, a combination of folic acid and vitamins  B-6 and B-12 [folic acid (0.8 mg/d), vitamin B-12 (0.5 mg/d) and vitamin B-6 (20  mg/d)]. The second group received a placebo. Researchers found that those taking  the vitamin combo had on average 29.6% less brain shrinkage. The B-vitamin  treatment also reduced homocysteine by 22.5%.</p>
<p>The authors concluded that &#8220;The accelerated rate of brain atrophy in elderly  people with mild cognitive impairment can be slowed by treatment with  homocysteine-lowering B vitamins. Sixteen percent of those over 70 years old  have mild cognitive impairment and half of these develop Alzheimer’s disease.  Since accelerated brain atrophy is a characteristic of subjects with mild  cognitive impairment who convert to Alzheimer’s disease, trials are needed to  see if the same treatment will delay the development of Alzheimer’s  disease.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The fourth principle of attitudinal healing is that we can let go of the past and the future. We all live on a timeline. On one end of this line is the past and there is absolutely nothing that we can do to change what has already occurred in our past. It&#8217;s completely and totally impossible. On the other hand of the spectrum is the future. We might like to think that we can predict our future, but most of us are not psychic enough to know what&#8217;s going to happen 10 minutes from now, much less a day a week or a year in the future.</p>
<p>The only point in time where we have any power is in the present moment. Right here, right now. In the present moment, we have the ability to heal our past and to lay the groundwork for our future. When we are focused in the present moment, we are able to see the past free of the filters that we have acquired over our lifetime. Without these filters, we can create a future that supports our spiritual, emotional, mental and physical well-being.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, most of us spend most of our time in either the past are the future. When we are living in the past our focus is generally on events which we consider negative and that we fear repeating. By being focused on the past we are actually missing the beauty and energy that is all around us and the present moment that can be used to heal these hurts and traumas.</p>
<p>When we are living in the future we are either projecting our fears from the past or our desires onto another time. This again, stops us from being in a place of power where we can actually create the future, we desire. This is not to say that we shouldn&#8217;t have goals or dreams, but rather that we should stay truly grounded in the present and do the work that is necessary to make them come true.</p>
<p>One of the ways I have found to be most helpful in staying in the present is to spend a few minutes each day in meditation. If however at some point during the day you discover that your mind and your body are not in the same place or time, there is a simple exercise that works wonders for bringing you quickly into the Here and Now. Simply sit upright in your chair with your feet firmly planted on the floor, hands and legs uncrossed. Close your eyes, take three deep connected breaths and allow yourself to relax. With your eyes closed, and continuing to breathe slowly and deeply, become aware of five things that you physically feel. Once you have done this, turn your attention to five things that you hear, and then to 5 things that you smell. You will be amazed at how much more present you are in your body after you have done this exercise.</p>
<p>When you are fully present in the moment you have the power, the clarity and the focus to heal your past so that it no longer affects either your present are your future. You also have the power, the clarity and the focus to do the work that will allow you to create a joyous and abundant future.</p>

<p>&#8220;A higher consumption of green tea is associated with a lower prevalence of  cognitive impairment in humans,&#8221; according to a study published in <em>The  American Journal of Clinical Nutrition</em>.</p>
<p>The study included about 1,000 Japanese people aged 70 and older.  Participants took tests of mental status including memory, orientation, ability  to follow commands and attention. They also told the researchers how often they  drank beverages including green tea. Those who reported drinking the most green  tea were least likely to show cognitive impairment, based on their test scores,  write Shinichi Kuriyama, MD, PhD and colleagues. Kuriyama works in the  department of public health and forensic medicine at Tohoku University&#8217;s medical  school in Sendal, Japan.</p>
<p>Drinking at least two daily cups of green tea was tied to the lowest risk of  cognitive impairment in Kuriyama&#8217;s study. Compared with people who drank a cup  of green tea up to three times weekly, those who drank two or more daily cups of  green tea were 54% less likely to have test scores in the range of cognitive  impairment.</p>
<p>Drinking green tea a little less often wasn&#8217;t bad. People who drank a cup of  green tea four to six times per week were 38% less likely to show cognitive  impairment than those drinking green tea less than three times weekly.</p>
<p>Kuriyama&#8217;s team considered factors linked to cognitive impairment, including  diabetes, smoking and advanced age. They also adjusted for potentially helpful  habits, such as physical activity, social ties, consumption of fish and  vegetables and self-reported overall health. Even after considering all those  factors, high consumption of green tea was still associated with a lower risk of  cognitive impairment, the study shows.</p>
<p>&#8220;To our knowledge, this is the first study to examine the association between  consumption of green tea and cognitive function in humans,&#8221; Kuriyama&#8217;s team  writes.</p>
<p>They note that natural compounds in green tea-especially a chemical called  EGCG (epigallocatechin-3-gallate)-have shown promise in experiments on brain  diseases in animals.</p>

This reward may not come from that person themselves in the form of a thank you or even the return of a similar favor but rather from the feeling you get of knowing that you come from a place of abundance.</p>
<p>We can only give that which we have to give. What this means is that when you reach out to someone else you innately understand that you have something to offer. You also understand that this is a situation where you temporarily have more, and the other person temporarily has less. This role will change from time to time and from person to person.</p>
<p>It is also important that you be willing to receive from other people. There is no greater frustration than having a gift that you wish to share and no one to share it with. The gifts that you have to share do not have to be big or huge. It can be as small as a smile or a kind word.</p>
<p>One of the ways of maintaining a positive mental attitude and that healthy sense of well-being in life is to constantly be aware of all the ways in which you can share with others and which they and the universe at large are constantly giving to you in both small and large ways. By counting your blessing you will see the opportunities you have, to give to someone else and become more and more open to the abundance and grace that exists within your own life.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignleft" src="http://personaldevelopmentsolutions.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Counseling-Session-e1283280362900.jpg" alt="" width="225" height="149" />About 5 years ago my husband and I were trying to define what we did and the title Holistic or Wholistic Psychology is what we came up with. When I look online today to see how the term is being used there is a lot of confusing information. It seems that people take a little from here and a little from there and call it holistic psychology.</p>
<p>Wholistic Psychology (I prefer the root word of ‘Whole’ rather than ‘Hole’) is solid psychology with a mind-body-spirit integrative approach. So a person that says they are a Wholistic Psychologist must by law be a licensed psychologist first and foremost. A person that practices Wholistic Psychology looks at many different things that can affect a person’s mental and emotional issues.</p>
<p><a href="http://therapists.psychologytoday.com/rms/name/Cherie_M_Valeithian_PhD_Kent_Washington_39294">Dr. Cherie M Valeithian, Ph.D.</a> says it well on her webpage…. “Let me explain what I mean by &#8220;wholistic.&#8221; I believe emotional, physical, and spiritual health are interconnected. Therefore, in addition to addressing mental and emotional problems, I also discuss health habits (diet, exercise, etc.) and spirituality (that which gives your life meaning, whether part of an organized religion or not).”</p>
<p>When a person is dealing with anxiety, a Wholistic Psychotherapist will look at many possible reasons for that anxiety and therefore make wholistic recommendations for decreasing the anxiety (not just mental or emotional ones).</p>
<p>Integrative Medicine has taught us the value of looking at the whole person when they come to the doctor’s office for a physical problem. Wholistic Psychology does the same thing for a mental or emotional problem.</p>
<p><strong>Wholistic Psychology = Solid Psychology Training + Integrative Mind-Body-Spirit Modalities</strong> (i.e. herb, vitamins, diet, flower essences, homeopathy, ETT, EMDR, EFT, meaning of life, spiritual issues, etc.). A person that practices Wholistic Psychology has many different “tools” in their therapeutic “tool box” they can use to help you feel better and move forward in your life.</p>

Healing is letting go of fear. There are two basic emotions that we as humans all experience, Love and Fear. While there are many variations of these two emotions everything will boil down to one or the other. The question then becomes do you choose love or choose fear.</p>
<p>When we are in a state of love we experience all of what we would judge to be the positive feelings; joy, connection, trust, warmth, and of course peace. When our mind and our body is in a peaceful state are very neuro-chemistry supports our health and well-being. When we move into a state of fear, however, this very same neuro-chemistry begins to create toxins and cause our bodies to shut down and deteriorate. This is the beginning middle and end of the dis-ease process.</p>
<p>Each and every day we are offered many opportunities to choose whether we wish to be in a state of love are fear. When we hear about oil spills, wars, famines, or other disasters is up to us whether this moves us into a state of fear or opened our hearts to reach out. Unfortunately, most people tend to react in fear when they hear of some disaster or catastrophe. It is vitally important that we learn how to read center ourselves and return to that sense of inner peace that allows us to feel connected not only to each other but to our Source as well. As we practice discerning between love and fear and willingly choosing to release the fear we support ourselves and others in growing and evolving in consciousness as human beings.</p>
<p>One of the things that that can be done to assist in choosing between love and fear is to simply take the time to make a list of all the feelings that are associated with love in all the feelings that are associated with fear. Once this is done, take a long look at this list and make the decision which feelings are the most supportive of your growth and development.</p>

What it means is very simply that you and I and every other person we meet is at our very core LOVE. Now this may be a new concept for most of us. We can often see that we’re love or at least we’re loving. But how about those other people out there, you know the ones that don&#8217;t deserve love and couldn&#8217;t possibly be a loving being at all. Guess what, they don&#8217;t exist.</p>
<p>Every single being on the planet is a divine child of God. It is up to you and I to recognize this essence within each of us. Far too often we become distracted and confused by the behavior of the individual and never look within to see who they really are.</p>
<p>When we take the time to truly see another person, it opens our heart and causes us to join with them in a very deep and intimate level. This intimacy is often frightening and sometimes painful as we begin to see who they are and what is behind the behavior they exhibit. It is important to realize that just because we are willing to see the person and to recognize that the essence of their being is love, it does not mean that we have to be present when they are acting out in that behavior. It does mean that we still recognize them as a divine child of God regardless of the behavior.</p>
<p><strong>AFFIRMATION: I see each person I meet as a divine child of God whose very essence is LOVE.</strong></p>
