Does Your Perception Matter?

What do you see first? The Chalice or the two faces?

Notice how your perception slips from one to the other once you recognize them both?

  • Is your perception all that important?
  • What difference does your perception make in a situation?
  • How does your perception affect your future, present or past?

Perception is how you view a situation or sensation. By definition: “Perception is the process by which organisms interpret and organize sensation to produce a meaningful experience of the world.”

I believe that it is extremely important to realize that your perception of a situation is just that, YOUR perception. Two people can experience the exact same situation and have a different “perception” on what happened.

An Example…

Let’s take, for example, two people walking along the street. One may be noticing only the trash, cigarette butts and debris on sidewalk and in the gutter and decide that the area they are in is truly one of filth and ugliness. The other person, walking right next to them may be looking at the potted plants and flower boxes along the way. What this person is seeing is leading them to believe that they are in an area of beauty and brilliance.

What’s the difference?

They are both on the same sidewalk, in the same place. What is the difference?  Only the perception they are holding. It is also important to note that they are both accurate in their perception, neither is right nor wrong. They are only seeing the same situation from different viewpoints.

The events of our lives are less important than our perception of these events. I, like all people, have been through both “positive” and “negative” experiences. I was married and then divorced, had money and then lost it, done well and then not so much…..but as I look back at these situations I know that each one them has made me the person I am today.

It is through our stresses, struggles, pleasures and pains that we grow. I would not be the person I am today if I had had a different life. As you go through tough experiences in your life, ask yourself…..

  • How can I view this situation differently?
  • How can I grow from this experience?
  • How does my perception affect me?

In Light,
Dr. Tricia Seymour
